STORY

Spickle is a four-piece, instrumental good-time consisting of: Paul Webb (guitar), Brett Davis (bass), Gregg Harney (guitar), and Kenny Sumera (drums). The band was formed some time in 1994 or 1995. It began when Paul and Brett lived in opposite sides of a shotgun double (which should have been condemned) on Foucher Street in N.O., LA. There was no A.C., dilapidated windows, leaky plumbing but bands could practice there. Paul and Bret had been jamming in a band called Brotherhood of Ignorance and later in another called Dulac Suede. Gregg and Kenny were in Thermos at the time. Having known one another from the New Orleans’ Decatur Street scene, the guys all shared a practice room in Paul’s house, which eventually became Kenny and Gregg’s house for a time. At that time Kenny and Paul started jamming with Marc Schultz (Dulac’s drummer and later, Thermos’ drummer) who played bass in Cottonmouth, a three- piece instrumental band that played one forty-five minute set at one show and didn’t really play at the practice room after that. Then, Thermos broke up and Gregg went on to play with The Bump Daddies. Meanwhile, Kenny and Paul continued to jam together, as did Paul and Brett. Kenny and Paul continued to jam instrumentally with two other guys, Danny and Durel of Suplecs, who shared the practice room. Collectively, Paul, Kenny, Danny, and Durel played for about a year as N.O. Industry, another instrumental experiment that didn’t last. “It wasn’t broken. We tried to fix it. We broke it!”—Kenny Sumera. At the time, Paul continued jamming with Brett in Dulac. They also created Hellen Keller Society, an eerie, monstrous instrumental featuring savage samples and hammer-to-skull hitting riffs. However, Dulac’s line-up changed with a new drummer (Mike Williams). Not long after the change, Eric, Dulac’s singer, quit. Kenny joined the band as singer. At that point, Brett, Paul, and Kenny started jamming, wrote a few songs, and called themselves Decapitated Heads With No Eyes Drinking Beer. They played their first show as such, without a singer and opened for a local rap group called Non-Stop. Paul, Brett and Kenny jammed for about 18 months before deciding they wanted to thicken their sound. Gregg was the obvious choice. Thus, Spickle was born. Spickle has been described as a “hurricane of sound” that hits hard and sustains, but calms through the eye and floods you with power on its way out. Their sound ranges in technique and influence, which varies in style. Some influences are: Firehose, Slayer, Jane’s Addiction, (what used to be) Metallica, Sade, Bad Brains, The Police, Fugazi , Pink Floyd, Stevie Wonder and Black Sabbath. According to the band members, Spickle is a philosophy of enjoying playing music without compromising opinions and/or ideas about what it should or could be. Quite simply, they enjoy it and hope others enjoy it as well. That’s all…….. No image. No package. No lyrics. Just music. Spickle.
